Program
Components
Each year Alabama Christian Academy accepts 44 students into the first grade program. There are two teachers with 22 students in each room.
Our academic program includes reading, language, spelling, handwriting, math, science, social studies, and Bible. Also, students visit centers used to reinforce social and academic skills. Our first graders receive physical education for 30 minutes every day, as well as enjoy a recess period in the afternoon. In addition, they receive art, music, computer lab and library instruction once a week. |
Application Process
After turning in an application with the non-refundable application fee, you will be contacted to schedule a time for a family interview. These interviews are usually conducted in January and February. At a later date, usually in March, you will receive a letter asking one parent and the child to come for our screening process. This lasts about an hour, and looks at the readiness and behavior of each child. Within three weeks of the screening date, parents are notified if their children have been accepted into our program. |

Language
Arts
The first grade classes at ACA utilize the Harcourt Reading Series. The reading vocabulary and spelling words are combined. Phonetics, spelling patterns, spelling rules, and guided reading instruction are used to help students read. Students learn sight words and reading/comprehension skills through literature, both fiction and non-fiction.
Language skills are incorporated into the daily reading and reviewed on a weekly basis. Proper grammar mechanics and usage are discussed and reviewed as introduced in the reading selections.

Math
Math Expressions by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt focuses on important core math concepts. Breaking apart numbers is a key concept running through the number concept units.
Math Expressions offers a wealth of learning activities that support language development. Students complete homework assignments to help achieve a high level of mathematical performance. A significant part of the classroom culture is the frequent exchange of math ideas and problem solving strategies (Math Talk). Student leaders lead quick practice activities. These experiences build independence and confidence.
The core topics presented at various levels enables students to do well on standardized tests. Many special features and approaches contribute to the effectiveness of Math Expressions.

Bible
The first grade Bible curriculum is a continuation of the overview of the Bible that was begun in kindergarten. Beginning with the creation, a Bible story is studied in depth for approximately one week, depending on the story. Genesis and Exodus are studied in detail. Students study Moses, the plagues and the heritage of the family of David. |
Social
Studies
Social studies and science concepts are integrated into all aspects of the curriculum when applicable to the reading selections, seasons of the year, and holidays that are being discussed.
Students learn more about the world in which they live. They learn about their school, community, and country. They learn social skills in relating to their community as well as practical skills in using maps, globes, and diagrams. The "Manners of the Heart" curriculum is also incorporated here. |
Technology
First graders are exposed each week to many aspects of technology through a twelve-computer, wireless lab. They receive 40 minutes of technology instruction per week. Various subject matter fields are enhanced through the use of such programs as Reading Blaster, Sammy's Science House, Bailey's Book House, Trudy's Play House, and Millie's Math House. First graders also use the computers in their classrooms for Accelerated Reader, a school-wide reading education program which encourages students to read novels independently.
