This is the government site that allows you to register for the Selective Service. All males must register on or before their eighteenth birthday. If you do not register, you will be denied any and all federal financial aid.

COLLEGE INFO AND PREVIEW DATES

College Info-January

  • Be aware of deadlines for scholarship applications!

  • Complete admissions procedures for your top college choices.

  • If you need letters of reference for your applications, be sure to ask your references well in advance of the deadline.  If you know, tell your references (teacher, youth minister, coach, etc.) what kind of information is needed in the letter of reference.  Reference the information I gave you in your senior notebook.

  • Send thank you notes to those people who take the time to write letters of reference for you.

  • Mail all applications, or give them to Mrs. Armstrong, who will mail them for you, including a copy of your transcript with the applications.

  • Be sure to take all college acceptance letters and scholarship offerings to Mrs. Armstrong for your senior file.

  • Register for a PIN so you can complete and sign the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.pin.ed.gov.

  • File the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov ASAP after January 1.

Scholarship Opportunities

  • Max4Kids Scholarship Program: Requirements: the applicant must be a MAX Credit Union member and must have a GPA of at least 3.0.  Application deadline March 11, 2012.  See Mrs. Armstrong for an application.

  • Sam Walton Community Scholarship: a non-renewable $1000 award for the first year of undergraduate study at an approved college or university.  If interested, go to the following website for general guidelines:  www.walmartstores.com/communitygiving/8732.aspx.  Deadline is March 15, 2012.

  • Burger King Scholars Program: Requirements:  high school senior with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Go to www.haveityourwayfoundation.org/bksp_eligibility.html  to apply.  Deadline is January 10, 2012.

  • NextSTEP College Prep Magazine:  Go to www.nextSTEPmag.com/WinFreeTuition to enter the scholarship contest for up to $20,000 in free college tuition

  • KFC Colonel's Scholarship:  Online applications available from December 1 to February 8 at www.kfcscholars.org.  You must be enrolling in an Alabama college or university, have at least a 2.75 GPA, and demonstrate financial need.

  • Best Buy Scholarships:  1,000 scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded.  Apply at www.bestbuy.com/scholarships or www.at15.com; applications will be available on online in early January.

  • Central Alabama Electric Cooperative:  Two $500 scholarships will be awarded by the Electric Cooperative Foundation.  Applicants must be dependents of CAEC members and reside in Elmore, Autauga, or Lowndes Counties.   Contact Tiffany Trueblood at 334-351-2125 or email ttrueblood@coop.caec.com.  Deadline is March 16, 2012.

  • American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship:  Criteria:  Student must be a legal resident of Alabama; student applying for scholarship must be the son/grandson/great-grandson or daughter/granddaughter/great-granddaughter of a veteran who served his/her country during times of war.  See Mrs. Armstrong for an application.  The deadline for this scholarship is March 1, 2012.  (There are some restrictions on these scholarships based upon the student's choice of college or university.)

  • American Legion Scholarship:  Criteria are the same as for the Auxiliary scholarship except only 2 letters of recommendation are required.  Deadline for applying for this scholarship is May 1, 2012.

  • Jimmy Rane Foundation Scholarship:  Application is online at www.jimmyranefoundation.org.  Requirements:  3 essays (2 short/1 long), letters of recommendation.  Deadline is February 15, 2012. 

  • Winning Characteristics Scholarship:  Offered by Making College and Career Count; one 1st place $2500 scholarship and 2 $500 scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE MAKING COLLEGE AND CAREER COUNT presentation.  To apply, go to www.makingitcount.com/scholarship. 

  • Maxwell Gunter Officers Spouses Club Scholarship:  Criteria:  Student must be a dependent of a U.S. military officer or enlisted person (active or reserve) assigned to Maxwell-Gunter or stationed at a remote location; dependent of retired personnel living in the Montgomery area; or dependent of deceased military personnel.  See Mrs. Armstrong for application.  Deadline:  Postmarked on or before February 29, 2012. 

  • Sports Quest Playing with Purpose Award:  Criteria: Athlete who has a 2.0 minimum GPA, currently a varsity level athlete in one or more sports; and a committed follower of Jesus Christ.  Apply online at www.playingwithpurpose.org.  Application deadline is March 1, 2012.

  • Dixie Electric Cooperative Scholarship:   If your parents pay their electric bill to a Dixie Electric Cooperative in Montgomery or Lowndes County, you may apply for this scholarship. See Mrs. Armstrong for an application.  Deadline is March 9, 2012.

College Info-December

 

  • If needed, register for the February 11th ACT.  (Regular Deadline: January 13, 2012.)

  • Finalize application essays if applicable.

  • Be aware of deadlines for scholarship applications!

  • Complete admissions procedures for your top college choices.

  • If you need letters of reference for your applications, be sure to ask your references well in advance of the deadline (10 working days for teachers or ACA staff).  If you know, tell your references (teacher, youth minister, coach, etc.) what kind of information is needed in the letter of reference.  Providing them with a copy of your resume is also a must.

  • Send thank you notes to those people who take the time to write letters of reference for you.

  • Mail all applications; or give them to Mrs. Armstrong, who will mail them for you, including a copy of your transcript with the applications.

  • AUM:  If you are planning to attend AUM and major in math, math education, mathematical economics, computer science, or pre-engineering, you may qualify for a scholarship that will pay ½ or complete tuition.  See Mrs. Armstrong for further information if you are interested.

  • AXA Achievement Community Scholarship:  375 $2000 scholarships will be awarded; students must show they are motivated and ambitious as evidenced by outstanding achievement in school, community, or work activities.  Apply at www.axa-achievement.com and look for the community scholarship application. Deadline for applying is February 1, 2012.

  • Abbott and Fenner Business Consultants Scholarship Program:  To apply for this scholarship, you will need to write a 500 to 1000 word essay on the following topic:  What was the most difficult time in your life, and why?  How did your perspective on life change as a result of this difficulty?  Visit the following website for more details:  http://www.abbottandfenner.com/scholarships.htm.
