GREAT TEACHERS
It has been said, “Those who can, do; those “who can’t, teach;”
but no statement could be further from the truth. Educators
are the foundation for the knowledge we attain during our formative
years: teaching us everything from our ABC’s to the Pythagorean
theorem. Almost anyone can stand in front of a classroom with
textbook and chalk in hand and be called “teacher,” but what
makes that teacher “extra” ordinary is his or her willingness
to offer love, selflessness, and compassion to the students
who sit at his or her feet.
I have sat at the feet of many different educators during my
school years, but the ones who have affected my life the most
are the ones who have given their all, and then some, to help
me learn. Ordinary teachers have been available to my classmates
and me from bell to bell, no more and no less. However, the
“extra” ordinary teachers were the ones who were willing to
arrive an hour early to help us understand a concept we were
struggling to grasp. A great teacher is one who relates to the
students and who offers not only intellectual lessons from a
textbook, but also life lessons from the heart. A great teacher
has the ability to inspire students to pursue their dreams,
never settling for anything less.
An unknown author once said, “A good teacher is like a candle-it
consumes itself to light the way for others.” The author sincerely
captured the true meaning of a great teacher. He or she is one
who is magnanimous, truthful, and patient, believes in every
student, cares for every student, and pushes every student to
strive for excellence. The great teachers are every child’s
candles, ready and willing to guide him or her to a place of
success and happiness.

AP SCHOLARS AT ACA
(Oct. 2007)
Three students at Alabama Christain Academy have earned the designation
of AP scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional
achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP)
Exams.
The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students
the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while
still in high school, and to receive college credit, advanced placement,
or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent
of the more than 1.4 million high school students in 16,000 secondary
schools worldwide who took AP exams performed at sufficiently high
level to merit the recognition of AP Scholar.
Students took AP exams in May 2007 after completing challenging
college-level courses at their high schools. The College Board recognizes
several levels of achievement based on student’s performance on
AP exams.
At Alabama Christain Academy, three students qualified for the
AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades
of 3 or higher. The 2007 AP Scholars are Jordan Berry, Hannah Moon,
and Megan Obert.
Most of the nations colleges and universities award credit, advanced
placement, or both based on successful performance on the AP Exams.
More than 1,400 institutions award a full year’s credit (sophomore
standing) to students presenting a sufficient number of qualifying
grades. In 2007, thirty-seven AP Exams were offered in a wide variety
of subject areas, each consisting of multiple-choice and free-response
(essay or problem solving) questions (except for the Studio Art
exam which evaluates students’ original artwork).

ACA Graduate Receives Second
Ever Youth Leader Award
On Feb. 21st, A. J. Powell, a Class of 2004 ACA graduate,
was honored by the Alabama Dept. of Rehab Services. A. J. received
the second ever "Youth Leader Award" issued by the Alabama
Governor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. This
statewide award recognizes one young adult with a documented disability
who has shown outstanding leadership, community service or advocacy
to help advance the efforts or raise positive awareness about Alabama's
disability community. This youth must also serve as a leader to other
young adults to include a positive attitude and should be currently
employed or working toward employment. We at ACA are so proud of A.
J.!!! He first came to the Academy as a first grader in 1992 and received
his entire elementary and secondary education at our school. Throughout
all of those years, A. J. was a joy to know. He was ALWAYS positive,
upbeat, outgoing, friendly and encouraging. As a senior, he was selected
as Mr. Citizenship by the faculty and as Most Spiritual by his classmates.
Currently, A. J. is a 4.0 plus junior at Auburn University and serves
as one of the youth ministers for the First Methodist Church in Tallassee,
AL. He is the son of John and Betsy McBride. Congratulations A. J.
!!!! You make us proud!!!
Scholar's Bowl Team
On Saturday, Feb 3rd, nine members of our Scholars'
Bowl team traveled up I-65 to Columbiana, AL to participate in Shelby
Co. High School's Invitational Tournament. Our group of juniors (Corey
Beasley, Ryan Little, Sawyer Wallace and Ben Young) competed valiantly
against strong competition, but were only able to win one of six games.
Ryan was his group's point leader for the day. ACA's senior group
consisting on that day of Katie Aaron, Jordan Berry, Kellie Hensley,
Megan Obert and J.P. Stokes, made the strongest showing to date of
any Scholars' Bowl team fielded by ACA since it's revival in 2005.
This group won 6 of 7 matches being nosed out by Brookwood High by
just 25 points. Jordan Berry was this group's point leader. Our senior's
won second place in their pool and brought home the first ACA Scholars'
Bowl trophy.
At the crack of dawn on Friday, Feb. 16th, six brave
members of our Scholars' Bowl team gave up a holiday to travel to
Dothan-Midland City, AL to compete in the Alabama Scholastic Competition
Association's district meet. Participating team members were: Corey
Beasley, Jordan Berry, Matt Bush, Kellie Hensley, Ryan Little and
Sawyer Wallace. Despite the fierce competition and the fact that due
to the holiday the team was disproportionately comprised of juniors,
this team managed to win four of seven games. A critical loss to Houston
Academy by just ONE QUESTION prevented this team from moving on to
the next level of state competition. Ryan Little was far and away
the team's point leader with 330 individual points. Sawyer Wallace
was second with 120 points.
ACA's 2006-07 Scholars' Bowl team has surpassed the
competition performance of last year's revival team. Hopefully, our
first two teams have provided both motivation and a sound basis from
which future teams can rise and soar. Thanks for a great season! You
guys and girls are amazing and destined to do great things.
