Alabama Christian Academy, Providing a Quality, Christ-Centered Education in Montgomery, Alabama

ELEMENTARY CURRICULUM:
KINDERGARTEN

Program Components

Alabama Christian Academy accepts around 40 students each year in its kindergarten program. It is contained in two classrooms with 18 to 20 students in each room.

Our students receive an academic program of reading, math, science, social studies, and Bible. Students also visit centers each day that promote social skills, fine and gross-motor skills, and computer skills, as well as the imagination! They receive physical education for 30 minutes every day and have the opportunity for a daily supervised recess. Our kindergartners also have the opportunity to experience art, music, library, technology, and a manners class once a week.

Kindergarten hours are from 8:00 to 3:00, but arrangements for a half-day program are possible. Most academics are taught in the morning, with lunch, story time, naptime, centers, and recess filling the afternoon hours.

Application Process

After turning in an application with the non-refundable application fee, you will be contacted to schedule a time for a family interview. These interviews are usually conducted in December and January.

At a later date, usually in February, you will receive a letter asking one parent and the child to come for our screening process. This lasts about an hour, and looks at the readiness and behavior of each child in a classroom setting.

Within three weeks of the screening date, parents are notified if their children have been accepted into our program.

Curriculum

Reading

The kindergarten classes at ACA utilize the “Storytown” curriculum by Harcourt Publishers. This curriculum places emphasis on phonemic awareness, high-frequency words, reading, comprehension, and writing. Teachers supplement this curriculum with songs, charts, games, reading and writing activities, and lots of repetition.

Math

ACA uses the Math Expressions program which employs objects, drawings, conceptual language and real world situations to help students build mathematical ideas that make sense to them. Topics covered include: numbers 1 – 120, money, time, number words, addition, subtraction, ordinals, measurement, counting by 2, 5, and 10, working in groups of 5 and 10.

Bible

The kindergarten classes have a daily Bible story and discussion beginning with Genesis and concluding with the Life of Christ. The students learn facts from the Bible, memorize verses, and learn how to apply these lessons to their lives.

Centers

Each day includes Learning Center Time. This is a time for our students to make choices of activities, develop self-control, and promote friendships. The centers include art, home living, reading and listening, math and manipulatives, blocks, and computers.

Technology

Kindergarteners are exposed each week to many aspects of technology through a twelve-computer, wireless lab. They receive 30 minutes of technology instruction per week. In addition to helping build small motor skills, the programs which are used enhance various subject matter fields. These programs include ones such as Sammy's Science House, Bailey's Book House, and Millie's Math House.
