ACA's elementary music program offers an educational and delightful
experience for pre-K through 5th grade students. Because
research tells us that a child's musical IQ is determined
by the age of nine, musical experiences in the early
grades at ACA (K4 – 1st) are dedicated to helping
students become tuneful, beatful, and artful* children.
By second grade, students begin adding to this foundation
through the introduction of reading music notation,
followed by an introduction to string instruments
in third grade. Fourth grade students learn to play
the recorder and are introduced to brass and woodwind
instruments, and fifth graders learn about proper
vocal technique for singing as well as gain an introduction
to percussion instruments. By the end of fifth grade,
ACA elementary students are well-prepared for further
study in either instrumental or vocal ensembles as
they progress into middle and high school. All students
can expect to benefit from their years of music study,
as studies show correlations between music and increased
memory skills, concentration skills, reading skills,
and math skills.
Performance opportunities are available for all
elementary students during the year, including programs
such as Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas,
Grandparents' Day, and the annual 5th grade “Spring
Fling”.
