Program Components

Each year Alabama Christian Academy accepts 72 students into the second grade program. There are three teachers in 3 classrooms, with 24 students in each room.

Our academic program includes reading, language, spelling, handwriting, math, science, social studies, and Bible. Also, each day students visit centers used to reinforce social and academic skills. Our second graders receive physical education for 30 minutes every day, as well as enjoy a recess period each day. In addition, they receive art, music, and library instruction once a week.

Application Process

After turning in an application with the non-refundable application fee as well as previous report cards and testing information, you will be contacted to schedule a time for a family interview.

Your child will be administered a short reading and math test to determine grade level placement also at that time.

Within three weeks of the screening date, parents are notified if their children have been accepted into our program.

Curriculum

Language Arts

The second grade classes at ACA utilize the McGraw/Hill Reading Series. This text consists of six theme units of literature. Practice workbooks are used to reinforce comprehension and phonics skills taught in the literature. Assessment tests are given for each story read. In addition, second grade begins using the Accelerated Reader program the second nine weeks of school.

Language is taught with the McGraw/Hill text, Language Arts Today. It consists of twelve alternating units of parts of speech and writing experiences covering all types of writing (narrative, descriptive, and so on).

Second grade spelling is also a McGraw/Hill text based program. There are 36 units with every sixth unit being a review. Units are based on phonics skills and word families. Each unit consists of 10 words and is taught for one week.

In second grade, each of the manuscript letters is reviewed with emphasis on formation. Words are written using each letter, and sentences are written using the words, emphasizing spacing. Cursive writing is introduced in the second nine weeks period, beginning with lower case letters, then upper case letters. The Zaner-Bloser Program is used.

Math

The A Beka Math Program is used here at ACA. This program uses math workbooks, testing workbooks, lesson guides, and manipulative and visual materials. Approximately 70 minutes is spent per day in math instruction. Specific math skills covered include addition and subtraction of the "1-18 families", the multiplication tables for the 2's through 5's, the division tables for the 2's through 4's, some fraction work, the metric system, thermometer reading, Roman numerals, time, and calendars.

Science

Science is taught using an Abeka science book, “Enjoying God’s World”. Units included in this study are: personal care and interaction with others, the animal world, the plant world, things that move, the air around us, and our earth and sky. Scholastic News, correlating trade books, and hands-on materials are also included.

Social Science

Social studies is taught using the MacMillian/McGraw-Hill text, Neighborhoods and Communities. Scholastic News, holiday studies, and community news and events are also included when appropriate. Topics include Family Ties, Earth - Our Home, The Working World, We the People, Discovering our Past, and People, Places, and Holidays.

Bible

Second grade Bible is taught for approximately 30 minutes per day and begins with a review and covers the books of Job, Joshua, Judges, Ruth and 1 Samuel through the anointing of David. Nine memory verses are learned, one each month.
